About twenty kilometers southwest of Madaba, you arrive at Machaerus. Also known in Arabic as Mukawir, the remaining ruins of the fortress of Herod the Great, lies on a hilltop overlooking the Dead Sea and the hills of Palestine.
It was here where John the Baptist was beheaded.
