Between the fifth and eighth centuries, various castles were built around Jordan. These ancient castles represent good examples of both early Islamic art and architecture. At the same time, they prove the country's rich history. They include fine mosaics, frescoes, stone and stucco carvings and illustrations.
TMost of these preserved castles are located to the east and south of Amman, and can be visited in a one-day trip.
They include Qasr Amra, Qasr Mushatta, Qasr al - Kharrana, Qasr at -Tuba and Qasr al – Hallabat. The black basalt fort at Azraq was the headquarters of Lawrence of Arabia during the Arab Revolt
