Amman, which is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, is the modern and ancient capital of Jordan. It was known as Rabbath-Ammon, the capital of the Ammonites, during prehistoric periods. Later it became the Graeco-Roman City of Philadelphia that was once part of the Decapolis league.
Amman was originally built over 7 jebels (hills). Today it spreads over 19 hills and has a population of 1.5 million.
Amman offers a variety of historical sites and modern facilities. It is a busy commercial and administrative center with many fine hotels, restaurants, art galleries and museums.
Amman is an excellent base to explore the vicinity and many interesting half-day or full-day trips.
The Citadel, which is situated on a hill in the city center, has ruins of the Temple of Hercules, an Umayyad Palace, a Byzantine church and an archaeological museum. At the base of the Citadel lies the 6000 seat Roman Theatre that is carved into the hill and still used for cultural events.
